El Paso Police charge wife with murder in husband’s stabbing death; read affidavit details

March 10 Update:El Paso Police have charged a woman with murder in the stabbing death of her husband.

Mandy Renee Johnson, 31, has been charged with murder in the death of 30-year-old Eric Word.

Word was found on the street in the 8900 block of Robert with serious stab wounds at about 7:49 p.m. on March 8.

Word died later at University Medical Center.

Johnson and Word lived together and have a small child. Johnson was booked late Monday into the El Paso County Jail on a bond of $1 million.

Johnson and Ward met in 2011 and became engaged on Dec. 24, 2014, according to Johnson’s Facebook page. Johnson also posted on her Facebook page in Dec. 2014 that she would be undergoing radiation therapy in January.

Affidavit Details

According to the affidavit, police saw an extensive trail of blood leading up to 8964 Robert Dr., Apt D. officers knocked on the door and spoke to Johnson.

Johnson told police that an unknown man came to her door at about 2 p.m. and asked to speak to “Robert.”

Johnson told police she told the unknown man that she doesn’t know a Robert and the man left.

Police talked to other witnesses and they told officers that Johnson told them that an unknown male came looking for her husband between 7:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and that he had left with them.

A detective returned to Johnson’s apartment and saw her mopping the floor and believed it to be suspicious, according to the affidavit. The victim had not yet been identified as her husband.

According to the affidavit, the detective said that during the ride to Police Headquarters that Johnson made a statement that she had been tryhing to get rid of her husband for quite some time due to him constantly mistreating her.

A police detective interviewed a 5-year-old child who was inside the place where the stabbing was suspected to have happened and the child told the detective that Johnson told her that the blood was her father’s (Word’s) and that he was dead.

The child was also instructed by the defendant not to tell anyone about it, according to the affidavit.

Police obtained a warrant to search the apartment on March 9. During the search investigators collected a soaking wet black towel with apparent bleach stains on it, according to the affidavit.

The item was collected near the entrance of the home inside a plastic trash bag.

Police tested the item at their crime lab and it tested positive for properties of blood. The bathroom sink rim, and the P-Trap were swabbed and tested positive for properties of blood.

The affidavit does not state who the blood belonged to.

March 9 story: No arrests have been made in a fatal stabbing that happened in Northeast El Paso at about 7:49 p.m. March 8.

Police arrived in the 8900 block of Robert and found the 30-year-old male victim with stab wounds. Witnesses were attending to the victim.

The victim, whose name was not released, had stab wounds to the torso and was transported to University Medical Center for treatment where he died.
