investigation in north central el paso…we have the latest developments also-happening today– the texas legislature is hearing a repeal about giving in-state tuition at colleges to children of illegal immigrants– and later– “all that is pretty powerfu stuff” closing arguements are set to be heard in the boston marathon bombing trial today… gusty winds are comng back into the borderland for the next few days and that’s why our stormtrack weather borderland for the next few days and that’s why our stormtrack weather team has issued a first alert! a very good morning el paso, las cruces, and juarez. i’m stephanie valle. and i’m hillary floren. good morning, everyone. we have a lot of overnight news to get to. but first… let’s get straight to your first forecast—we have issued a first alert this morning because we are going to see some gusty winds this morning. —krystal a live look at stormtrack doppler radar is showing clear conditions outside this morning, aside from a few spotty clouds. currently around our region the gusts are into the 20s to 30s. and temperatures are warmest around el paso but not too rough this am! some of us are sitting in the 40s and 50s, with el paso in the 60s. as for the sky conditions, no blowing dust our there this morning but later today do expect we could see some dust with the highest gusts hitting this afternoon. that’s when those gusts could peak into the upper 40 mph to low 50 mph range. we’ll talk more about what to expect for the rest of this work week and the weekend ahead coming up in your full forecast. now to our round the clock coverage out of north- central el paso. a new development in the stabbing investigation out of north-central el paso. first responders picked up a man at a convenience store on the 5-thousand block of alabama. investigators are also about 8 east of that location at the intersection of van buren and lackland. that’s where we find gmep denise olivas with the latest… denise? meanwhile… about 8 blocks away… police swarmed the area near van buren and lackland. that intersection was completely closed off. according to police radio transmissions overheard in our newsroom… it was related to the stabbing investigation. however… officers on the scene would not confirm that … or if that was where the stabbing took place. stay with abc-7 as this story continues to unfold. now to round the clock coverage out of north-central el paso. one person is in critical condition at a hospital after a stabbing overnight. it was reported around midnight at a convenience store on the 5-thousand block of alabama. that’s close to mc- kelligon canyon. this is new video just into our newsroom. police took a couple of people into custody… but it’s not clear what role they had with the stabbing… and they were not in handcuffs. for help. He was later taken to complete coverage from university medical center happening later today el paso county commissioners will decide who is going to replace william hanson and laura ponce on the university medical center board. county commissioners vince perez and carlos leon announced their nominations last week. perez nominated miguel fernandez, a utep business grad and tele-communications c-e-o. leon nominated joy martinez, c-e-o of the nazareth hall nursing center, he says the appointments are critical as the county hospital and the children’s hospital work to improve their financial relationship: carlos leon, county commissioner: “i think it i very important that communication lines between commissioners and our appointees, our board members, are always open and they keep us informed. Because some of these votes are very critical and we vote on information that we receive both from the management and administration of umc and our board members.” keep in mind, the children’s hospital owes the county hospital more than 90 million dollars. both HOSPITALs have an agreement in place to settle the staggering debt. now it’s up to commissioners court to sign off on the deal by the end of this month. today… there will be a hearing in austin where arguments will be made to repeal a 2001 law allowing some young people in this country — illegally — to pay in-state tuition at public universities and colleges in texas. republicans say the law is a magnet that attracts undocummented youths to texas. a border security sub-committee will be having the hearing today. senate bill 18-19 would repeal the law in place. the texas tribune says some lawmakers are questioning why the bill will not be discussed by an education committee instead. state sen. jos rodrguez – who is against the bill – told the texas tribune quote, “It is implyin these students are threats to the country, when in fact they are trying to contribute to the country,” – end quote. starting today… el pasoans with eating disorders will have a new resource to change their lives and recover. el paso’s behavioral health system is now offering specialized outpatient treatments- for people who may be struggling with anorexia, bulimia and more. the program will also help people with group therapy, meal nutrition and education over nutrition. “they show up in th morning…all meals monitored while they are here.” anyone who feels they may benefit from the new program may call the number on your screen. 915- 521-2471 for a free assessment. it’s been nearly two years since tragedy struck the boston marathon. now the trial for one of the men accused of setting off a bomb that rocked a nation and changed a city forever comes to a close. abc’s marci gonzalez has the new information about the trial this morning. after a month of disturbing evidence nat- bomb? and heartwrenching moments on the witness stand- sot robert bloom/bu law school that kind of powerful testimony will not be forgotten” openin arguments – began this morning… today- traffic cams… still ahead a dangerous typhoon makes landfall this weekend, it may have dwindled but residents are still on high alert and later– the big ncaa championship games are happening this week for both men and women’s basketball–details coming up meteorologist krystal klei has your detailed forecast. krystal… and this is abc-7, where news comes first!
