How San Jacinto Plaza delay may affect events

to the construction at the san jacinto plaza which is behind schedule. so we want to know what will happen to all the events scheduled to take place there. ABC-7’s andrew j. polk is live at the plaza with new information. andrew? rick and estela, san jacinto still has a way to go. the city says it’s 80 percent done, but still doesn’t have a completion date yet. nats – construction it was supposed to be done in november … nats later pushed back to march… nats and still in april, construction drags on nats now, events scheduled in and around the plaza, like the mariachi loco music festival for mother’s day weekend, are having to make changes. standup “s as you can see, a lot of work still being done and still needing to be done at san jacinto plaza. and there still is no end date. but the city says they’re working with the event organizer and destination el paso to try and make the upcoming nearest event a successful one.” Niland 8.41.33.03 “Whe we first met to discuss the possibility of having this event in the heart of our downtown, when we thought it would be ready my March 1st. At that particular time, i said absolutely it would be great. But he always knew, the event organizer always knew there would be this level of risk associated with, but it was a risk he was comfortable with.” th organizer says his event will go on as planned, but on the surrounding streets of main, oregon and mills. Irene Ramirez, city engineer 9.02.48.23 “Probably the biggest component is the canopy that is being installed to protect the reinstallation of the los lagartos sculpture that is going back into the plaza. This is a critical component of the project. the city says it’s keeping the contractor accountable … but people working and visiting downtown say it’s been a hassle and more. 8.54.48.08 “Its bee busy. Seems like they still have a long way to go, and i know theyre supposed to be done soon, right? 8.59.56.23 “But i mean it is an inconvenience. Just to look at it is an inconvenience even with no offical end date, the clock is still ticking for this project. other major events like the neon desert music festival at the end of may are coming soon. no one i spoke with knew if specific plans were in place for that… but rep niland said that they’ll deal with the issues coming from further delays as necessary. reporting live in downtown el paso… andrew j. polk, abc-7. andrew, thank you for the latest.
