Veteran El Paso Times columnist retires

readers of the el paso times – including you estela. that’s right rick … longtime columnist ramon renteria is putting away his notebook and mini- recorder. after 39 years with the newspaper, ramon retired today. i got the chance to sit down with him to talk about the legacy he’ll leave behind: co-workers and mariachis spent their lunch hour paying tribute and sharing stories about ramon. he’s made a lot of friends over his career as a journalist. with titles like “maybe it’s all goo afterall” and “getting old i not just a number” ramon has been providing a a unique look at life on the border. ramon’s writing style has been the target of critizism, but he tells them…. this is how we speak here in the border you go anywhere and you hear people mixing the languages what you call Spanglish. i like to have fun with words. ramon has made a lot of memories and hopes to make even more.. i have four granddaughters I’d like to spend time with… the hugs and applause are a testament to ramon’s humor, his honest and ethical storytelling. They said sometimes you made us laugh, you made us cry and there was a few of them that really came from the heart because you’re bearing your soul to the public. i would hope that at least that some of the younger reporters that they looked at the scope of my writing and they appreciate and value good writing. ramon’s desk is clean, except for a pair of books. there’s also a picture of a young journalist and the phrase he coined: hay te wacho – or see you later and other renteria-isms. after the mariachis played “el rey” — “the king,” –ra got to check off one of the many things on his bucket list. to sing with a mariachi. ramon’s farewell colum will be in sunday’s paper. we’d like to wish ramon “buena suerte” for a hap retirement. share with us some of your favorite renteria-isms, the conversation is happening on our facebook page, kvia-dot-com. if you thought the winds were bad today … hang on to your hat! the gusts
