No injuries reported after east side motel fire

Firefighters spent Sunday battling a third alarm fire at the Motel 6 on 1330 Lomaland in between Yarbrough and Lee Trevino off Interstate 10.

The fire erupted at about 2:29 p.m. Sunday. Flames and heavy smoke were visible for several hours.

A total of 25 units and 74 firefighters responded to the scene.

A fire department spokesman told ABC-7 the fire damaged at least 30 percent of the property and the other two wings of the motel were able to be saved using a method called “trench cutting.”

Police closed Lomaland Drive near the freeway while they ran hoses from multiple fire hydrants in the area.

There are no reports of injuries at this point. People staying at the hotel and staff evacuated before crews arrived on scene. The initial investigation has revealed that the fire broke out while plumbing work was being done at the motel.
