Woman Thrown from Vehicle Remains in Critical Condition

An El Paso man suspected of throwing a 51-year-old woman out of his pickup Saturday evening was arrested while the victim remains in critical condition at an area hospital.

Rene Victor Carrillo, 48, of the 8400 block of Lockheed in El Paso, Texas, is charged with one count each of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, battery against a household member and possession of cocaine.

The 51-year-old woman was airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso where on Monday she remained in critical but stable condition.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, April 25, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to Union Avenue, near Oak Street, where it appeared the woman fell from the passenger seat of a red pickup truck. The woman was on the roadway, unconscious and with injuries to her head.

Las Cruces Police investigators learned that Carrillo was travelling above the posted speed limit, west on Union, with his left hand on the steering wheel and was punching the woman with his right hand. A witness told detectives that as the pickup approached Oak Street, the passenger door of the vehicle opened and Carrillo punched the woman causing her to fall from the moving vehicle.

Carrillo remained on scene and was detained without further incident. During an inventory of Carrillo’s property officers located a white powdery substance in the suspect’s wallet. A field test of that substance revealed the presence of cocaine.

Carrillo was subsequently booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $50,000.
