UFC fighter charged in Albuquerque hit-and-run crash
Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Jon “Bones” Jones is out on bail and charged in a hit-and-run crash that happened Sunday in Albuquerque.
Jones faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving death or serious injuries after turning himself in to police overnight.
The ABC-7 New Mexico Mobile Newsroom obtained the arrest warrant filed for Jones.
It stated three vehicles were involved in at crash at an intersection in southeast Albuquerque.
Witnesses told police Jones ran a red light and slammed into the driver side of another car driven by a pregnant woman.
The victim, 30, suffered a broken arm.
Another witness told police Jones got out of the silver Buick SUV he was driving. The witness said he repeatedly asked Jones if he was OK, but Jones ignored him.
An off-duty officer who drove up to the scene to check on the victim recognized Jones as a UFC fighter.
Jones allegedly ran to the top of a dirt hill, ran back to the scene of the crash, grabbed cash from the SUV and fled on foot.
When police arrived he was nowhere to be found.
Police found a pipe with marijuana in the SUV along with rental car documents in Jones’ name.
Jones is scheduled to headline and defend his light heavyweight title against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at UFC 187 in Las Vegas on May 23.
“We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available,” the UFC said in a statement.
