Hotel to be built next to Sunland Park’s casino

Today our New Mexico Mobile Newsroom learned about plans to build the first ever hotel in the city of Sunland Park.
The Mayor of Sunland Park told ABC-7 that the project hopes to bring more jobs and more tourism to the city.
“This was a dream of the owner, Mr. Fulton has always wanted sunland park to be a destination resort and we’re bringing his dream to fruition,” General Manager Rick Baugh said.
Baugh says he’s glad to be making history. There are several motels off between I-10 and the track. This will be the first hotel within Sunland Park city limits.
“When you look at the perimeter of the chain link fence and the yellow fence, that’s where the hotel will be centered at,” Baugh said.
The $7 million dollar project includes a four story hotel with 79 rooms and a sky bridge connecting the hotel to the casino and racetrack.
Sunland Park Mayor Javier Perea says this will be a big boost of revenue for the city.
“It’ll help increase the property values around that area and also like I mentioned it gives us the opportunity to adopt a lodgers tax, which is another funding mechanism for promotional marketing purposes for the city of Sunland Park,” Perea said.
The project will bring more than one hundred local construction jobs and around 25 permanent jobs.
