Gov. Abbott extends fireworks ban in El Paso to July 5

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has extended El Paso County’s fireworks ban until the morning of July 5.

On Monday, June 22, El Paso County Commissioners Court voted 4-1 to approve banning the sale, use and possession of fireworks in El Paso County’s unincorporated areas and extending the county judge’s declaration of local disaster past seven days.

Abbott’s authorization of the extension was needed as part of the approval process.

The extension allows for a full ban on the sale, use and possession of fireworks in the unincorporated areas until 7 a.m. July 5.

Violation of the ban is considered a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of UP TO $500. The ban does not impact professional displays.

“I am very thankful to have Governor Abbott’s support in extending the disaster declaration and helping keep our community safe during these drought conditions. Any County wishing to ban fireworks must go through a vigorous vetting process which includes having a willing County Judge to issue the Declaration, consulting with local and statewide emergency and fire personnel, meeting the standards set by law to issue the declaration and have both a supportive Commissioners Court and Governor. In no way is the decision or the process to ban fireworks an easy one. I understand that this decision impacts vendors, but the safety of our community must come first. I hope our community understands that issuing the declaration to ban fireworks is purely based on my intent to keep our community safe during these drought conditions,” El Paso County Judge Veronica Escobar said in a statement.
