last two thre round i was finally getting my distance, … by the it was too late.!” the boxing world has its eyes on the don haskins center, where dozens bouts are taking place. that was chris “th nightmare” arreola after hi fight ended in a draw this afternoon. just the beginning of a full day of boxing inside the don haskins center. and there’s still plenty of action left, including a fight featuring boxing star julio cesar chavez junior. good afternoon and thank you for joing us. i’m josie ortegon. and i’m evan folan. high lights from some of the action so far are coming up in sports! . but first … some residents living in an east side neighborhood are saying their street isn’t safe. people living on the 10-thousand block of bermuda say speeding cars have led to wrecks and property damage to their homes. they say it’s only a matter of time before someone gets struck and now they’re petioning to get speed bumps. abc-7’s jerry najera is live with the story … this is the petion residents are beginning to sign. it reads far to many people are not repecting the fact it is a residential area. they tell me their street is the only through street between album drive and mcrea these are two very busy streets if you are unaware of the location. nieghbors tell abc-7 there have been far too many accidents on their block. many drivers they say are speeding through and have ran into thier cars and even their homes. residents have story after story where cars have plowed into their trees- their mailboxes and they say its only a matter of time before someone walking gets hit. “i’ve seen accidents where ther are kids on the sidewalk that could have been impacted our kids are important to us and we want ot make sure when we are walking to school that they are safe” residents also tell us police do monitor the area but they say it’s not enough. they feel something as simple as speed humps can make a big difference. seven apartments in west el paso caught fire–causing thousands of dollars in damage. it happened shortly after 3 this morning at the cap-rock apartments in west el paso. our ’round the clock new team was there. fire officials say the fire started in a townhome and spread. fortunately, crews were able to control the blaze quickly. no one was injured. residents tell our round the clock news crew–they immediately self- evacuated after smelling smoke atop one apartment. we’re told damage is estimated at 200- thousand dollars. the fire is still under investigation. d-j klever found himself behind bars after last night’s texas showdown festival. he’s yelawolf’s d-j, one of the opening acts for rapper ice cube last night. dj klever, whose real name is josh nathan winkler, was charged with resisting arrest and having a prohibited substance in a correction facility. he was booked into he el paso county jail under a thousand dollar bond. the tattoo festival continues with limp bizkit tonight. turning to stormtrack weather. a little on the warmer side today! dan i’ve been keeping an eye on the forecast and i saw some raim chances this week. is that the case today? a warm day so far. tonight we’ll see the winds pick up. i’ll show you how long they’ll stick around coming up in my extended forecast. you’re watching abc-seven, where news comes first. welcome back to abc-7 at 5, i’m evan and i’m josie ortegon. you may have seen videos of people running and jumping on and off buildings. the urban sport of parkour has been gaing traction in el paso. the boys and girls club held the annual jam el paso parkour event today. abc-7 reporter julio-cesar chavez is live in the newsroom with more. the parkour community in el paso used to be so small that if you wanted to be part of a team you might have gone to juarez. that is no longer the case. local parkour practioners, or tracers, got together for jam el paso. the event is meant to bring people from all over the city and beyond to share techniques, give advice, and meet each other. one gym at the boys and girls club on delta street has been fitted with boxes, beams and bars to give people something to maneuver around. some guys we spoke with today say the sport has many benefits. “both physically and mentally parkour, the nature of the sport really teaches you the nature of your body and it teaches you to surpass those limits in a respectful and responsible way. those are only some of the mental benefits. physical benefits are obviously, you see some of these guys jumping around 8, 12, 15 feet like nothing.” if you would like to start practicing parkour, it’s more than just imitating some youtube videos. the first thing everyone should learn is to land and roll to prevent injuries. wow! that looks like so much fun julio! i’m not going to lie though it looks a little scary. thank you for that report. a group of young boys rolled up their sleeves to upgrade a church today they revamped the church’s landscape– and said they expected nothing in return. eagle scout troop 279 cleaned up mount green olive baptist church’s front lawn. not only digging out weeds and removing trash –but removing old landscape rock to replace it. an act considered a huge donation to the church: apostle austin: “thank god fo their service. it’s wonderful and outstanding to see young men out here working hard like this and look what its amounted to and its good to see good young people doing service for the community. ” one of the scouts came up with this project as an initiation to the troop. txdot says the city of el paso is in danger of losing more than 21 million dollars in transportation project reimbursements … although city officials dispute that claim, and the amount outstanding. this debate continues sunday night at 10:35 for abc-seven xtra. the director of city development, mathew mcelroy … and district six city rep. claudia ordaz … join our maria garcia to talk about the road funding issues here in el paso. for nowm though, you are taking a live look outside from our exclusice abc-7 mountain cam. beautiful out there. your complete and accurate stormtrack weather forecast. is coming up, after the break. long range upper air
