Joint Commission on UMC: All deficiencies cleared

Two weeks ago University Medical Center had to halt all elective and non-emergency surgeries because of deficiencies found in one of their departments.

The Joint Commission, an agency that surveys and accredits hospitals across the nation said at the time the hospital didn’t have proper documentation, policies and education in the sterile processing unit.

This led to a preliminary denial of accreditation.

The hospital had 23 days to correct any problems they had Thursday after 20 days a surveyor for the Joint Commission returned.

The surveyor found that all deficiencies identified have been addressed and UMC’s plan of action was approved.

According to the surveyor whose name was withheld by the hospital:

“I can’t say enough about the work that has been done in such a short period of time and about everyone’s commitment to make things right…All deficiencies have been cleared.”

UMC never lost accreditation as a result of the Joint Commission surveys.

A formal notification of the surveyors findings has not been released.
UMC anticipates the notification to take place soon.
