this is all the news you need to start your saturday, august 1st. abc-7’s “good morning el paso weekend starts right now! good morning and thank you for joing us… i’m andrew j. polk. a man is behind bars for allegedly killing his wife. the case is just one of two homicide investigations in the borderland. the latest on both investigations in just a moment — but news out of el paso’s lower valley where shots rang out early last night. the department of public safety telling us a state trooper was trying to pull over the driver of a ford explorer. the driver allegedly tried to get away… and led the trooper on a chase through a neighborhood just south of i-10 off zaragoza. d-p-s tells us the trooper opened fire in the neighborhood trying to stop the man … but he managed to get away for a short time. the man reportedly crashed the s-u-v into a fence on colonel street and that’s where troopers took the man into custody. here’s what a witness told us happened: “i saw like a red truck going fast and the police…i told my cousin to come in so fast.” the suspect’s identity has not been released. a man is locked up accused of shooting and killing his wife. 25-year old steven quinteros-rios is now in police custody. police say he is responsible for the death of his 29- year-old wife, blanca rivera. at around 9-15 thursday night — officers were called out to a home on the 11-thousand 5-hundred block of st thomas. the call came down as a family fight. when officers arrived they found rivera’s body. they say she had been shot — allegedly by quinteros-rios. a neighbor we spoke with says she saw the fight between the couple. she described the frantic scene: “i heard my niece say, ‘they’re fighting, they’re fighting,” so i came outside and the garage was open all the way, and i saw him have her in a headlock. and he was punching her, throwing her against the car, and she was yelling at him to stop and she was bonking her head. and he wouldn’t stop. and my mom tried to run across the street to stop it and prevent it, but he grabbed her by the hair and drug her in and slammed the door. friends and family are mourning rivera’s death. about a dozen people gathered in front of the crime scene to remember the mother who’s life was cut short. “i still can’t believe it i talked to her 10 minutes before she passed away, 10 minutes before she passed away. she picked up my daughter was talking to me holding her and just to think that she’s dead i can’t picture that” for nieghbors the death of blanca rivera still seems like a bad dream some even witnessing the argument between steve quintero and rivera moments before police say he shot and killed her “they hit the car like three times really hard” nieghbor luis nunez says they next time they heard about rivera was when her 8 year old daughter came out to talk to police. “sh was inside the house she saw everything” “she said m mom is dead my mom is dead i couldn’t believe it” as they prey and sing to remember rivera many worry about the young girl she left behind.. “it broke m heart even if i only know them…the little girl i love her” co-workers say rivera was a full time soldier working for the reserve unit and she will greatly be missed. new information about another murder investigation just north of las cruces. from our new mexico mobile newsroom … the victim has been identified as 17-year old jaycob alba of las cruces. he was killed early thursday morning at a mobile home park on the 26-hundred block of dona ana road. sheriff’s deputies say the teen was with several other people and they were trying to break into a mobile home. deputies say he was shot and killed by the group he was with. a person living inside the mobile home was taken to the hospital. investigators are trying to determine why the group broke into the home. deputies taped off an.entire section of the mobile home park as they investigated. it’s unclear why the teen was shot. neighbors say they heard several gunshots and immediately called authorities: cg: joe herrera, neighbor, 25.seconds :07:09:45-07:10:10 “i kne something was going on. within 2-3 minutes, cops, deputies started showing up. i said, “oh my god” happens, but it doesn’t surprise me. it bothers me because there are kids here, i got my grand daughters here. a lot of people come and go through here, it bothers me that something like this” deupties say the suspects fled the scene. several people have been detained. as soon as we get more info, we’ll let you know. …stormtrack weather now! let’s get your first forecast with stormtracker dan martinez. pediatricians at children’s hospital say u-m-c c-e-o jim valenti wasn’t telling the truth in his bankruptcy deposition. one wrote a stinging letter to the judge … and gathered 60 signatures from local pediatricians. dr. aaron ross challenges valenti’s answers to a couple key questions in that deposition. abc-7’s darren hunt reports. “i’m willing to fight for the children’s hospital … ” dr. aaron ross wrote this letter to the bankruptcy judge about valenti’s deposition. valenti was asked: “if the um bankruptcy plan is approved, what impact do you think that would have upon the pediatric physicians and their willingness to stay at chidlren’s hospital?” he answered: “my board chairman and myself visit with approximately 80 percent of the pediatric physicians in the community … they openly state they have supported myself not 100 percent, but 200 percent.” valenti was also asked: “ar there children’s hospital doctors who would be opposed to umc taking over children’s hospital?” his response: “i imagine ther could be. i don’t know of any. none have expressed that to myself.” “i want the judge to know tha el paso children’s doctors are not behind a umc takeover.” ross wrote: “mr. valenti asserts that he is supported by at least 80 percent of the pediatricians in the community. this is a bold claim that is not believable.” “we can state without reservation the takeover of epch by umc is opposed by a large majority of pediatricians … we oppose the takeover of epch by umc.” “there’s not support for mr valenti at el paso childrens, that’s just a fact, there’s no support, i’m sorry.” valenti would not speak on camera but umc did send a written response, saying it would not engage in mudslinging or personal attacks. “jim valenti has met with man el paso children’s hospital and community physicians, individually and in groups — and they have provided support to umc and valenti’s efforts to find a solution to help epch.” dr. ross says pediatricians at the hospital just don’t trust valenti. darren, did ask him if u-m-c does take over the children’s would doctors stay or leave? he said there are doctors who have said, no matter what, they will not work for valenti. a litter of puppies found thrown away … in the trash!
