Wrong home, wrong victim; Four teens arrested in deadly home invasion
Four teenagers are accused of killing a 17-year-old as they tried to break into a home to rob it.
Dona Ana county sheriff’s deputies have charged Daniel Muoz, 17, as well as 18-year-olds Jordan Gift, D’Shaun Hermans and Adrian Hortelano with the death of Jaycob Alba, 17.
Investigators believe the five teens conspired to invade a mobile home in Doa Ana Friday at 3 a.m., but their plan went awry.
Detectives say that, during the home invasion, the teens began shooting at the home and at a vehicle parked in front of the house. Deputies say the teenagers broke into the home and fired at a man who was sleeping inside, wounding him on the foot. However the man was not their target, and the home was the wrong one.
The investigation revealed Alba was outside the home and at one point, a bullet struck him in the head, killing him almost instantly. The other four teens fled, leaving Alba’s body just outside the mobile home, deputies say.
Muoz, Gift, Hermans and Hortelano are charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, one count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, one count of aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon, one count of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or occupied building causing personal injury, and one count of tampering with evidence.
They have been booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
