Las Cruces churches consider changing security systems
Yesterday’s incident has caused churches all over Las Cruces to rethink their security systems.
Sunday morning two explosives went off at two churches. Las Cruces police says the explosives weren’t firecrackers. They say the explosives could have caused serious injury or even death.
Employees cleaned up debris this morning outside of Calvary Baptist Church, one of two churches targeted. Employees are now looking for ways to prevent future attacks.
While Calvary Baptist church has a security camera, it doesn’t record video. Church leaders say its used to provide a live feed for workers inside.
Lead Pastor of Calvary Baptist church Kevin Glenn says security cameras aren’t the only thing they’re hoping to improve. He says they’ll look at changing the way mail is delivered. Instead of using a mailbox, they may change to hand delivery. They’ll also possibly change the way church greeters are trained.
“One of the things we’re going to need to look at is some additional training on helping them be ok with looking for anything that’s unusual in an individual or in their behavior in the demeanor,” Glenn said. “Not only here but I know at Holy Cross Monsignor Anderson is also looking at adding cameras to the outside. They have their inside covered but adding cameras to the outside.”
Leaders are encouraging everyone to come back and worship. As Governor Susana Martinez said yesterday at a news conference, “This attack does not stop our lives.”
