ABC-7 obtains video of deadly shooting involving police officer
ABC-7 obtained surveillance video of last week’s shooting near Dyer street from the owner of Player’s billiards.
Police said last Thursday, the night of the incident, that it was an officer-involved shooting. Almost a week later, police are still not releasing any more information.
On Wednesday ABC-7 obtained the video and showed the video to Charlie Bertram’s mother and widow.
“This was a big deal and my camera caught it so,” said Michael Corren, the owner of Player’s billiards.
The video, which ABC-7 edited for time purposes, shows a police unit approach. Bertram is wearing a white T-shirt in the video. At one point, he appears to reach inside the car. That’s when the officer backs up and appears to pull his weapon. Bertram backs up and then his body seems to jerk, then he spins and runs away, the officer chasing him.
The incident happened in the corner of the parking lot. Bertram ran toward the Hair Play Salon and Spa near the Gateway, where he collapsed. He was later pronounced dead at University Medical Center.
“They shot him! Oh my god! They shot him,” Bertram’s mother, Anna Richburg, said through tears while watching the video.”It’s ok baby. We’re going to get justice for you. I promise you that.”
Miranda Rosario is Bertram’s widow.
“He ran away! He ran away,” Rosario said. “He was not a threat to anybody.”
ABC-7 asked Bertram’s family what they want to be done.
“Justice, answers,” his mother said. “I want closure.”
ABC-7 also asked if there was a reason Bertram would run from police.
“Because he’s scared of police probably,” Rosario replied.
In addition, ABC-7 asked if Bertram owned a gun or carried a gun.
“As far as I know, what the police officer told me, yes,” Richburg said. “That I know? No.”
ABC-7 checked court records and Bertram has had multiple run-ins with police, including four arrests just this year. His mother admitted to ABC-7 he had a warrant for his arrest. ABC-7 had several questions for police, but they said the investigation is ongoing and would provide nothing further.
