El Paso Police release more information in deadly Aug. 6 officer-involved shooting

The El Paso Police Department has released more information on the officer-involved shooting that occurred Aug. 6 in Northeast El Paso.

Police say the incident began at 8:22 p.m. that night.

An on-duty, uniformed officer, identified only as a four-year veteran of El Paso Police, observed a vehicle traveling along the 4000 block of Dyer with a headlight that was out, which is a defective equipment violation.

The vehicle pulled into the Players Club Parking lot in the 4000 block of Dyer and the officer then drove in and exited his vehicle in the parking lot.

Police say the officer observed several individuals exit the vehicle and began to communicate with one of the occupants.

At that time, the officer also observed a male, later identified as 22-year-old Charles Bertram, to be armed with a gun.

The officer then turned his attention towards Bertram, ultimately firing his service pistol at Bertram.

The officer then observed Bertram run from the scene and gave chase. Bertram died in a nearby parking lot.

Police say that investigators have confirmed that rounds were fired from the officer’s gun as well as the gun that Bertram was holding.

Investigators from the El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Person’s Unit, along with the Texas Rangers — including the El Paso Police Department’s Shooting Review Team — are conducting the investigation. The El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office also is involved in the investigation.

The officer, as is customary in officer-involved shootings, is currently assigned to administrative duty while the investigation continues.

Once completed, the facts of the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review. Police will not release more information at this time.
