UMC doctors help hurt Dbacks minor league pitcher
was a fair ball that recently injured a pitcher in the arizona diamondbacks organization, leaving his life in the hands of quick- thinking el paso doctors. abc-seven’s darren hunt is live tonight with a story you’ll see only on abc-7 … darren. rick/estela, 25- year-old reno aces pitcher evan marshall is lucky to be alive … after taking a line drive off his head three weeks ago during a game against the chihuahuas, fracturing his skull. “two-and-two … swing and line drive that has hit the pitcher on the head … ” chihuahuas announcer tim hagerty reacted with great concern on august 4th at southwest university park … after reno pitcher evan marshall was struck by a ball hit at 105 miles per hour off the bat of el paso’s jason hagerty. “he’s on the grass next to th pitcher’s mound … a line drive up the middle, from what i saw with the naked eye, it hit him on the head … the reno players gathering … the coaching staff and now marshall pops up, he’s sitting down, what a relief.” bu marshall wasn’t out of the woods yet. he suffered bleeding and swelling of the brain, leading to emergency surgery at university medical center and a week in intensive care in el paso. “my neurosurgeon was fantasti and they got me opened up and honestly at that point every minute was really important about how i was going to be able to come back because damage was being done with the pressure that was building in my skull.” marshall, now recovering in phoenix, spoke about the injury this week. they got me opened and they relieved pressure really fast and stopped damage from being done.” three years ago, before el paso’s ballpark was built, major league baseball officials toured u-m-c … the only level one trauma center in the area, just in case something like this happened. marshall’s wife thanked the diamondbacks and doctors here for saving her husband’s life. “the diamondbacks did a beautiful job of getting me and our dog straight to el paso getting our family there getting him taken care of they were immediately out there with us taking care of us … the doctors in el paso and the staff with the aces, they saved my husband’s life.” marshall doesn’t expect to be able to pitch again until next season, but he does expect to make a full recovery. chihuahuas officials declined comment today and we did not hear back from u-m- c. while in el paso three years ago touring u-m-c, major league baseball officials indicated the concern was not only about treating player injuries but fan injuries as well. rick and estela. from southwest university park … to the sun city’s other ballpark: cohen stadium in northeast el paso. last
