Comprehensive wellness program launched in YISD

approach to health just launched at more than a dozen ysleta i-s-d campuses. abc-seven’s stephanie valle reports — the catch global foundation’s program is more than just a fitness routine: nats it’s pe for fifth graders at cadwallader elementary. and the parachute is so popular with the kids. “that was actually my favorit game.” this gam is called “shark attack.” “i like the suspense and goin under the parachute.” “it has to be memorable. it has to be fun.” the coaches have refined the art of using entertainment to conceal learning. “no one wants to come to pe and they’re just doing sit-ups and push-ups and when you do something fun they don’t realize they’re getting a good workout.” this approach is encouraged under the catch program. catch is fairly new to yisd – 14 campuses in the district just began implementing the successful, grant-funded wellness program a few weeks ago. the big goal is to bring down childhood diabetes and obesity. 11.38 this is a program that will help educate the students and catch them early on so that they don’t lead in that direction. they can lead a healthier lifestyle instead. 11.49 “the catch program doesn’ simply focus on the physical education. but coaches will be spearheading the program in the schools.” “it includes the cafeteria staf and the parents and educating the parents and taking it back home 9.48 the head of health and physical education for yisd thinks catch validates the importance of pe in schools. study after study shows healthy kids attend school more often. and so they learn better and do better in school. 10.35 julianna valles is on board. 43 it’s just like getting exercise and being strong 47 sv, abc-7. officials expect to implement the catch program at yisd’s remaing elementaries next year. her legacy lives on!
