abc-7’s “good morning el paso weekend” starts right now good morning and thank you for joing us… i’m andrew j. polk. we begin this morning with the el paso chihuahuas! they needed to beat fresno last night to stay alive in the conference championship series. it was a rough start for the dogs. trailing fresno 4 to nothing. but the dogs come back… ultimately getting the win they need. the final score is 6 to 4, chihuahuas. game 4 of the series is tonight at 7-oh-5 we’ll have more highlights for you coming up later in sports. …stormtrack weather now! let’s get your first forecast with stormtracker iris lopez three people were seriously injured in a 6-vehicle crash last night. it happened around 8-30 on the 11-400 block of socorro road. socorro p-d tells us that there were 6 vehichles involved in the crash, and one of those vehicles actually rolled over. 9 people were injured. of those, 3 had serious injuries. emergency crews had to use the jaws of life to get one driver out of their vehicle. and one person was airlifted to university medical center for treatment. investigators are still trying to determine if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. the department of public safety confirmed a woman’s body was found near mile marker 66… past the hueco tanks border patrol check-point in hudspeth county. this was as close as our crews could get. you can see the road closed off to traffic. you can also see a helicopter flying to the scene and border patrol rushing to get there. drivers were sent on a detour. this is the usual route to lubbock … where the miners will play texas tech today … but we’re told the team had already arrived before the closure. / shifting gears now — earlier this week , our new mexico mobile newsroom learned the dona ana county sheriffs office will no longer be responding to certain calls. sheriff ki vigil says he just doesn’t have enough manpower to respond to medical calls, welfare checks or even serve warrants. now las cruces police chief jaime montoya is firing back … saying the sheriff’s move will put residents in danger. this is a story you’ll see only on abc-7. sheriff vigil says his office is not getting the funding it needs … and he just doesn’t have enough money to keep deputies from leaving for higher paying positions with other law enforcement agencies — like the police department. the police chief disagrees and asks why vigil never reached out to him: “i think when we look at ou records, we probably lost more to the sheriff’s department than we have gained from the sheriff’s department.” “a memo lik this where you’re changing services and procedures and policies the best avenue is to talk to your partners – it would be state police, it would be us.” chief montoya says he has reached out to sheriff vigil, but the sheriff has yet to agree to meet with him. but the sheriff tells us that is not true. in fact, vigil tells us he has met with the police chief five times since taking office nine months ago. the sheriff also dismisses montoya’s claim that the police department loses officers to the sheriff’s office. the sheriff sent us this statement, quote: “that is categorically untrue. i would like montoya to provide statistical data proving otherwise. why would police officers want to lose $5 an hour?” — end quote a former do?a ana county employee is accused of stealing more than 20- thousand dollars from people charged with drunk driving and domestic violence. 40-year-old sylvia dorado worked as a compliance monitor with the county. investigators say over the course of several years — dorado allegedly stole money orders from clients in a program for d-u-i and domestic violence offenders. if convicted — dorado faces up to nine years in prison. / el paso congressman, beto o’rourke, wants to meet with veterans this weekend. he will be hosting two town hall meetings today . the first one will be a general town hall meeting at the el paso community college transmountain campus. it runs from 9 to 10 a.m. the second one will be a veteran town hall meeting. it will be at the same location from one to 2 p.m. the congressman’s staff will also be on-hand to help with problems you may be having with federal agencies. “bell the ring of a bell resonated through el paso’s lower valley yesterday to honor the firefighters, police officers and emergency medical responders killed on 9-11. city officials were also there as el pasoans remembered the horror inflicted on this country. ” i think it strengthened our resolve as a nation, a stronger community, i think it had the opposite effect of what the intended goal was.” “it’s a da that changed history forever and changed how we lived from that day forward. in the ceremony today, you looked around and there wasn’t a dry eye in the hosue as we remebred how history was changed,” and coverage from our new mexico mobile newsroom in las cruces where flags flew at half staff. governor susana martinez says its meant to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks… … and to thank those who continue to preserve, protect, and defend our nation at home and abroad. nearly a hundred el pasoans are about to embark on a religious journey they say they’ll treasure for the rest of their lives. it’s a pilgrimage to philadelphia, where they hope to see pope francis. the group has been gathering to pray in order to prepare physically and spiritually. earlier, we spoke with two catholics and asked them why they’re excited about seeing pope francis: deacon frank segura: “they’re expecting two-and-a-half, three million people to go. and i think just the excitement pope francis generates with some of the things he’s been introducing – his encyclical – it’s just energizing and revitalizing the church and i’m excited about that.” pat vargas “i think the bottom line with this pope – he’s a people’s pope and he is encouraging compassion. no necessarily to change the doctrine, but to show love and compassion. and that’s what it’s all about. we’re all in this together. so love and compassion is the bottom line and i think that’s his message.” pat vargas tells us she expects
