the chihuahuas were hoping to keep the season alive. what the results were from last night’s game. el paso’s congressman holding more town halls… and offering help to constituents and veterans fighting red tape. and later – a big day for some of the zoo’s biggest residents. and they’re definitley looking good for their age! and in stormtrack weather, iris! this is all the news you need to start your sunday, september 13th. abc-7’s “good morning el paso weekend” starts right now “one team wins and one team loses. don’t hang your heads.” encouraging words from jamie quirk, the chihuahuas manager. unfortunately for the dogs they’re journey in the p-c-l championship ended last night. the fresno grizzlies proved too much for them. they lost 7 to 4. but it was a good run and something we here in the borderland should be proud of: “it was a great year. the played their hearts out. i told them that. and the crowd was the best minor league crowd i’ve ever seen.” this might be the end of the road for the chihuahuas this season but it was a good run. fresno, meanwhile, will continue on to the pacific coast league championship series. they’re going to face round rock in a best-of-five busy investigating a stabbing early this morning police were called to durango and overland a little after two this morning. when officers arrived they found one person stabbed. they quickly sealed off the area between san antonio and overland along durango street. at this time we do not know the condition of the victim or if anyone has been arrested. we’re working to learn more, and will have the latest as soon as it’s available .. we have new information on a crash that closed off most of o-10 and raynolds in central el paso. well we now know that it all started because a dog jumped out of a pickup truck. the crash happened yesterday just after our 8 o’clock newscast. the crash involved a sun metro bus and a beer truck. seven people were removed from the wreck in stretchers. they were taken to the hospital, but emergency crews say their injuries are not life threatening. witnesses called 9- 1-1 after seeing a dog jump out of a truck and get hit by a vehicle. it caused the chain reaction. as a reminder–the fire department says the public should avoid transporting animals on the back of trucks – however if you do – they ask drivers to secure the animals in a crate. a man arrested in el paso is now a suspect in the deaths of a wisconsin woman and her daughter. 30-year-old courtney bradford and her 10-year-old daughter, jasmine, were found dead in a new richmond house fire on september 2nd. according to the autopsies, the two were likely stabbed to death. police arrested the woman’s ex- boyfriend in el paso on felony warrants. they were for operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and credit card fraud. police have called him a “subject of prime interest” but haven’t charged him in the killings. congressman beto o’rourke is holding more town halls… both to address the serious national issues he votes on, and hear constituent concerns. :08 :30 1:08 el paso’s congressman beto o’rourke is continuing to reach out to hear the issues concerning the community, this time at epcc in the northeast. “a variety of issues from the federal budget to the va, to the agreement with iran to stop them from developing a nuclear weapon. and lots of different points of view.” and whil taking comments and criticism, o’rourke’s is also holding a town hall specifically for veterans… and offering assistance to those caught in red tape, like navy veteran ramon valenzuela. valenzuela sot “i’ve been going on fiv years trying to make a claim. and that’s the reason i came to see mr. o’rourke and see if he can help me with it.” and beyond individual help, o’rourke says that with the feedback he’s gotten and the obvious frustration with the v-a, he’s hoping el paso can improve individually and become a model for the rest of the system. “when the va is telling us veteran is waiting 15 or 16 days for a mental health appointment, and we conduct a statistically valid scientific study that shows veterans are waiting over two months and a polls is because he talks about the issues and not personal attacks. bernie sanders spent part of his saturday with college students in south carolina. the democratic presidential candidate spoke in front of a crowd at winthrop university in rock hill. sanders called for raising the national minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour.. he also called for making public college education tuition-free and paying for it all with higher taxes on wall street and the wealthy. meanwhile presidential hopeful donald trump is still leading the pack of republican candidates … but dr. ben carson, a former neurosurgeon aims to change all that. nat sound of carson speaking he’s been awarded the presidential medal of freedom and 67 honorary doctorate degrees, but dr. ben carson is hopeful his next accomplishment will be president. sot: 32:48 “all have to do is tell the truth and that takes a lot of the pressure off of me.” unlike many of the other republican candidates, carson is not a politician, he’s a neurosurgeon. sot: 32:28 “do you think that mayb it’s a good thing that you’re not a politician running?” “i think it’s a ve good thing because you know to run as a non- politician is less stressful because politicians always have to have their finger up in the air saying which way is the wind blowing what’s politically expedient and i don’t have to do that.” carso says he wants to focus on deemphasizing race and emphasizing respect. he blames recent conflict in america on the lack of respect that people have for one another. sot: 33:00 “a lo of the problems that we’re finding in places like ferguson is due to the fact that people don’t respect each other sometimes.” supporter say they like his conservative views but what carson has that other candidates don’t is a calm demeanor that attracts so many. sot: 34:53 “for one thing i think he can bring back confidence in being able to believe your leader confidence in being able to think he cares about the country truly cares about the country and is putting it first.” sot: 38:02 “i like h platform and his ideas and he uses common sense that is the biggest draw for me and he’s not a professional politician.” verbatim: carson is second only to trump in polls. this perhaps prompting the donald to focus his criticism on carson. the billionaire businessman says he doesn’t think carson “has the energy” t negotiate with world leaders. yesterday was a big day for two elephants at the el paso zoo. that’s because it was savannah and juno’s birthday! savannah and juno are elephants. and they had a blast yesterday with all their guests. the two took a break from the heat with a bubble bath and special treats. if you’re wondering how old they are… juno turned 47 this year… and savannah is a whopping 64
