“We have been patriotic about this particular day,” Jesus Rivas, an El Pasoan at the event said.
Rivas is a veteran who came from Mexico to serve in the United States Army. Heis now an American citizen and says its important to keep Mexican traditions alive.
“so that we don’t forget our roots,” he said.
The event has gone on for the past 20 years in El Paso. Alberto Ruiz says thousands gather to reenact the birth of the nation.
“There’s something nostalgic and it brings out the Mexican within every single person who has anything to do with Mexico,” Ruiz said.
One of the big moments of the night was the reenactment of El Grito, otherwise known as the Cry of Dolores, which marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence.
