Socorro ISD moves ahead with facility, population studies
The Socorro Independent School District is moving forward with plans to assess its facilities and student populations.
The board voted Tuesday night to open up competitive bidding for a facility assessment and population study. The budget for these studies is around $300,000.
The study would assess around 11 district buildings. SISD wants to know how its older campuses are fairing, such as Socorro High, which is 50 years old. It also wants to know which areas are projected to have more students and may need more schools, and vice versa.The study’s can also be used for preventative maintenance.
“My budget will allow for certain things we can address throughout the year,” said Chief Operations Officer Tom Eyeington. “Carpet replacement, repainting the facility, minimal roof repairs and things like that. But if I was to replace a whole roof or mechanical system, then we’d have to go out for other funding.”
By more funding, Eyeington alludes to voter-approved bonds. It’s too early for SISD to know whether it will need to ask residents for funding. But in the cases of Ysleta and El Paso ISD’s, both proposed bonds after the results of it’s facilities studies can back.
