UMC May Withdraw Offer, Allow Children’s Closure

new details on the children’s hospital future. for the first time – umc saying it’s a real possibility it might let the troubled hospital close down. abc-seven’s complete coverage with maria garcia. maria: last night children’s hospital filed it’s restructuring plan. it includes two options: find a partner other than umc to infuse money into children’s. or accept umc’s prior offer to take over. but just this afternoon – i learned umc may no longer want to take over children’s: 00-05 23-30 52-1:01 00:48 children’s may have lost their only saviour through this umc now saying it’s possible it’ll withdraw its prior offer to take over children’s. because children’s may owe the federal government between 22 and 66 million dollars depending on potential penalties. for saying it paid nearly 30 million in rent to umc when it really didn’t. 04:30 it would be impossible for umc to assess a $66 million debt i asked children’s ceo mark herbers why it inaccurately reported to the feds children’s paid millions to umc. 07:28 our cost reports are filed consistent with medicaid guidelines which matches our audit report umc now sending children’s a new offer: allowing it time to find a partner if it will pause litigation while it does that. 14:17 if we have a third party strategic partner, they can infuse new money and pay off the creditors in full herbers says confidentiality agreements don’t allow children’s to disclose who the potential partner would be. but children’s wants the option to leave their current building if they do find a partner. 01:19 taxpayers paid for it and basically taxpayers don’t get any money back from the money that they owe and they want to leave the premises and leave the taxpayers with this shell of a buuilding there the question now: what happens if children’s cant find another partner and umc withdraws its offer to take it over? 04:40 the children’s hospital would have to close it’s doors and umc would probably open up a pediatric wing. that’s a real possiblity herbers says securing a partner for children’s depends on how much they’re able to reduce children’s rent payment to umc going forward. children’s also wants to pay umc only about 12 million of the 106 million umc says children’s owes it. umc says no way. and maria, you’ll be digging deeper on this on abc-7 xtra this sunday.. maria, thank you.
