Pope at White House
The Pope is starting a historic visit in the United States with a busy day in the nation’s capitol. Starting with a formal welcome at the White House, a papal parade along the national mall, and a mass at which the founder of California’s missions will be made a saint.
The papal plane touched down at Joint Base Andrews and the first family was there to welcome him. Then this morning a crowd of at least 11,000 guests turned up to welcome the Pope on South Lawn of the White House.
There Francis made a speech where he backed President Barack Obama’s efforts on climate change and rebuilding ties with Cuba. He also talked about the global economy. It’s become a central theme of his papacy to point out how the economy enriches the few at the expense of the many. He said, “I would like all men and women of good will in this great nation to support the efforts of the international community to protect the vulnerable in our world and to stimulate integral and inclusive models of development.”
Francis also pointed out he was a “son of immigrants.” That could mean he’s setting himself up to take on debates like immigration in the future. A timely discussion as the 2016 presidential campaign has been stirring the pot on the subject.
