FBI asks for public’s help in church bombings investigation

Members from multiple agencies held a news conference Monday briefing the media on the investigation of two explosions at two Las Cruces churches.

Authorities say the three month anniversary of the bombings is what prompted Monday’s conference.

The first explosion on August 2nd ripped a mail box off of a wall at Calvary Baptist Chruch. Nearly a half hour later, a second explosive went off in a mail box at Holy Cross Catholic Chuch. No one was injured.

“The FBI and our federal, state and local law enforcement partners have not stopped trying to solve this case,” Robert White, with the FBI, said.

At the news conference, authorities wouldn’t say what type of device caused this, other than that it could’ve seriously harmed someone. They also couldn’t say if they believe one person was involved, or if there might have been more.

They said that they need help identifying the man in a surveillance video outside Calvary Church moments before the explosion.

“The man is wearing dark blue short sleeved tshirt plaid shorts and hiking boots,” White said.

Some Las Crucens ABC-7 spoke with say they’re a little on edge knowing authorities have yet to catch whoever set off the explosives.

“You’re scared to go anywhere,” one Las Crucen said. “You’re scared to go to public places because you don’t know who’s out there.”

Authorities are reminding the public they continue to tirelessly work on the investigation.

“I assure you this case is not on the back burner and nor will it be,” White said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-CALLFBI. The FBI is offering a $20,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest and a conviction. Las Cruces Crime Stoppers is also offering a $5,000 reward.
