Lee Trevino in town promoting All-America Classic

Former El Pasoan Lee Trevino is in town, promoting the Sun Bowl All-America Golf Classic.

That means lots of old stories and laughs as “The Merry Mex” held court at El Paso Country Club on Friday. And he did not disappoint, taking questions about everything from his relationship with the late/great Don Haskins to his old home in Santa Teresa.

“I miss it,” Trevino said, “I missed El Paso.”

Trevino turns 76 next month. He moved to El Paso in 1966 and spent 11 years in the Sun City. He won six majors and four more on the Senior tour.

“The great thing about the City of El Paso is it’s like family,” he said.

Trevino spoke about his relationship with Haskins.

“We played a lot of golf,” Trevino said. “What I didn’t know about Coach Haskins was that he was actually a better pool player than he was a basketball coach. So the hustler got hustled!”

ABC-7 also asked him about the bathroom in his old Santa Teresa home, which to this day remains wall-papered with pictures of him.

“Yeah that was a big mistake when I did that bathroom, because I’d have guests and they would stay in there for two hours,” he said. “I didn’t know what the hell they were doing.”

Trevino spent a lot of time with the 41st All-America Classic field.

“When I was 3, 4, 5 years old, I actually watched a whole bunch of Lee Trevino short game videos,” Wake Forest sophomore golfer Will Zalatoris said. “That’s how I kind of got into the game a little bit. So for me it’s pretty cool.”

Trevino also talked about playing golf with five different presidents.

“President Bush would putt out and he’d go to the next tee,” Trevino said. “I’d have an eight footer and I’d hear (him tee off). He’d already hit on the next tee, so I’d just pick my ball up and I’d walk over there and he’d say, ‘Did you make it?’ I’d say, ‘Yep, another birdie.’ Hell I think i shot 56 that day. You imagine a kid coming out of a cotton farm in Texas played with five presidents? Only in America you can do that. You can’t do that anyplace else. It’s been a wonderful run, a wonderful run.”

Trevino called the All-America Classic field “the future” of golf. He urged everyone to catch a round this weekend at El Paso Country Club.
