Update: Person killed in Thursday’s West El Paso crash identified as 14-year-old boy

Nov. 6 Update: The person killed in Thursday night’s multi-vehicle crash in West El Paso has been identified as 14-year-old Diego Gonzalo Fernandez, an eighth grader at Canutillo Middle School.

His mother and father, who were in the same vehicle as Diego, are in critical condition, according to a Canutillo Independent School District spokesman.

Police’s Special Traffic Investigators say a 2001 Ford F150 was eastbound on I-10 at the Redd Road overpass when the F150 crashed into the rear of a 1991 tractor-trailer in the right lane.

That collision set off a chain reaction of collisions involving four other vehicles.

The 1991 tractor-trailer rolled off the freeway and onto the Redd Road on-ramp.

The F150’s driver, Diego’s mother, was transported to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The 41-year old male passenger, Diego’s father, was transported to Las Palmas Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Diego, a passenger in the F150, died at the scene.

The drivers of the Jeep Wrangler and the GMC truck were both transported with non-life threatening injuries to Las Palmas Hospital.

There are five additional counselors at the middle school “to help students and staff through this tragedy; we are one family and we will pull together,” Canutillo ISD spokesman Shane Griffith said.

Original Story: I-10 East at Redd Road is open again after a deadly crash on the 5600 block of S. Desert Blvd. in Northwest El Paso.

Traffic was backed up all the way to Transmountain Thursday night.

Police reported the crash at about 6:00 p.m. An extrication call went out about half an hour later, meaning emergency crews need help taking a person out of a vehicle.

Video recorded at the scene by an ABC-7 photographer shows a white semi flipped on its side on South Desert and a badly mangled Ford F-150 on the far right lane of I-10 East. There is a body lying on the freeway covered with a white sheet.
