Parents of teen killed in crash are in stable condition
The mother and father of a 14-year-old boy killed in a crash on I-10 last week are in stable condition, according to El Paso Police
Diego Gonzalo Fernandez, an eighth grader at Canutillo Middle School, was killed the night of Nov. 5 in a multi-vehicle crash.
Police’s Special Traffic Investigators say a 2001 Ford F150, driven by the mother, Simona Fernandez-Alacala, was eastbound on I-10 at the Redd Road overpass when the F150 crashed into the rear of a 1991 tractor-trailer in the right lane.
That collision, which happened around 6 p.m., set off a chain reaction of collisions involving four other vehicles.
The 1991 tractor-trailer rolled off the freeway and onto the Redd Road on-ramp.
Diego’s mother was transported to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The 41-year old male passenger, Diego’s father, was transported to Las Palmas Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Diego, a passenger in the F150, died at the scene.
The drivers of the Jeep Wrangler and the GMC truck were both transported with non-life threatening injuries to Las Palmas Hospital.
There are five additional counselors at the middle school “to help students and staff through this tragedy; we are one family and we will pull together,” Canutillo ISD spokesman Shane Griffith said.
