County Judicial Management Report

so what does it actually show? reporter andrew j. polk has this story that he’s been following for months now. you’ll see this only on abc-7, andrew? rick and estela, the judicial management report has been over a year in the making, and breaks down the performance of the courts into six parts… to show the resources it takes to make it all work. the first one – the cost per case to the county, expenses from beginning to end. and the second – how many days in jail each court requires. it’s all about efficiency. “these types of reports are use so the public can be more informed about the judicial process.” commissioner vince perez has been a strong supporter of the judicial management report since it passed in march 2014. it shows some clear trends during the first three quarters of 2015. in judge marco lizarraga’s 168th district court … the cost per felony case dropped from over $12 hundred … down to about $9 hundred per case. but all felony courts saw an average increase from just over $14 hundred to about $16 hundred per case. another measurement – the number of days suspects spend in jail. judge alma trejo’s criminal court number one had a six percent decrease from the first quarter of the year, to the third. that’s for misdemeanor cases. it mirrors other courts. a drop from 11 thousand to ten and a half is about five percent. “whe you blend the cost of the downtown jail and the annex, it costs about $88 a day to incarcerate somebody.” “so while commissioner pere says that this is a very useful tool, members of the judiciary say it’s not an accurate representation of what’s actually going on.” ” is absolutely not apples to apples. and case to case, it’s not.” judge ana perez ha been a vocal critic of the overall commission efforts. she encourages people to look at what’s out there now, and question the conclusions. “attend commissioner’s court. they should write letters. they should do whatever they need to do to get answers, because that’s the whole reason why we publicize this information.” while they are working with the same basic data, judges in the county are working on their own study to come out next spring … focusing on the numbers they say matter most across the courts. rick and estela? the 19-80’s … new wave
