ABC-7 Listens – crash, wreck or accident?
the rest … especially when it comes to keeping us on our toes! rick cabrera explains in abc-7 listens. unfortunately and sadly we have to report on way too many crashes. some of them deadly. and that means we have to use many of the same nouns and verbs to describe those collisions. which brings us to susan … a self- described loyal k-v- i-a viewer. “it seems all the news anchor have started to use the word ‘crash’ when describing a car accident. “crash is a verb, not a noun. look it up. “this drive me crazy. i noticed this started a couple years ago and it happens all the time.” obviously words are big part of our business so our managing editor wasted no time following up on susan’s email. “thank you for taking the tim to share your thoughts. i respectfully disagree. “‘crash’ is commonly used as a verb and a noun, and even sometimes as an adjective . he even included a link to the dictionary-dot-com listing. susan though is still not a fan of the word or its use. “looking at the link you posted as a noun does show a vehicle collision. “but, i bet this definition came about as time went on because people just started saying it that way. “it will still annoy me when i hear it. national newscasters do the same thing and so do people in conversation.” susan, eric did some more digging and according to merriam-webster the first known use for “crash” as noun was in 15-80! but susan … i completely understand where you are coming from … we all have our pet peeves. i’m not a big fan of wreck or accident … because in many cases it wasn’t an accident … the driver was distracted, on the phone, maybe even drunk. rick cabrera. abc-7 listens.
