First Alert Coverage: heavy winds in Las Cruces
There were a lot of blowing trees and leaves as NMSU students braced the cold and rushed to class. The New Mexico Department of Transportation confirms a portion of the highway between Silver City and Lordsburg is closed because of this severe weather.
“We have all their crews out on a winter weather advisory. We do have a section of New Mexico 90 closed due to icy conditions. We have high winds crossing Deming and the Las Cruces area who are alerting orders to be cautious, slow down and be aware of your surroundings,”Bridget Spedalieri, spokesperson New Mexico Department of Transportation, said.
The wind speeds across southern New Mexico reached anywhere from 50 to 60 miles per hour. Because of the wind chill, it could feel much colder then it actually is. Some NMSU students we spoke with were caught off guard by just how fast the weather turned.
“Lot of wind,” One student said. “I saw a couple girls their hair was flying everywhere, leaves everywhere, dust in my eyes. Its just crazy and now all of a sudden its just dark and cold.”
