Governor Martinez joins more than half of nation’s governors in opposition of Syrian refugees
Tuesday, Governor Susana Martinez joined the more than half of the nation’s governors who refuse Syrian refugees.
A spokesman for Governor Susana Martinez says her top priority is keeping New Mexico family’s safe.
In a statement he said, “The governor strongly opposes the Obama administration’s plan to accept more Syrian refugees until there is a very clear plan in place to properly vet and place refugees and the voices of governors and the public can be heard.”
ABC-7 asked Las Crucens if they think the doors should remain open for refugees in our state.
“Just because, I mean, we all came from somewhere, right? I’m an immigrant, I’m sure some of your ancestors are immigrants,” one Las Crucen said.
“I would venture to say trying to get some type of record out of Syria they would say that building that is burnt down, that’s where they keep all the record,” a former border patrol agent said. “So, there is not a good vetting process and so I think we should approach with caution before we accept them and truly find out who is coming in the United States.”
Tuesday, leaders in the Catholic and Evangelical communities pleaded not to make refugees scapegoats, saying they, too, are victims of ISIS.
