UTEP Football: Leftiwch Out For Season, Metz to Start vs La. Tech

Mack Leftwich is out for the remainder of the season after suffering his second concussion of the year.

Garrett Simpson has left UTEP. Simpson and Leftwich competed for the starting job in the off-season. Simpson suffered a high ankle sprain and ultimately lost out on what coach Kugler called one of the closest competitions he’s seen. Yet, Simpson barely played and was the holder for kicks when he did find his way to the field.

Ryan Metz filled in as the starter when Leftwich was hurt earlier this season and led the Miners to 2 wins. Coach Kugler chose to ride the hot hand and stick with Metz.

Metz will return to the starting role this weekend when the Miners play their home finale against Louisiana Tech. The Miners must win to keep their bowl eligibility hopes alive.
