Freeway closure! Freeway closure! Freeway closure!

If you’re planning to do some shopping on the Westside this weekend, the Texas Department of Transportation will be shutting down a critical stretch of Interstate 10 on Sunday.

The closure will take place from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in both directions from Executive Center Boulevard to Mesa Street.

TXDOT spokesperson Jennifer Wright tells ABC-7 the decision to shut down the freeway came about Tuesday night.

Eastbound traffic will be diverted to Executive Center Boulevard. Westbound traffic will be diverted to Mesa Street.

The closure is part of TXDOT’s ongoing Westside highway project. El Paso Electric requested to move two transmission lines to install them in that area, said El Paso Electric spokesman Eddie Guitierrez.

“There’s never really a good time to do any of these. Construction is an inconvenience we understand that but to make sure we are good partners as we work with TXDOT this is the request moving forward,” Guitierrez said.

Wright says TXDOT understands that the closure is an inconvenience but there are alternative routes.

“Just go to Transmountain to get around El Paso and not pass through downtown,” Wright said.

Heavy traffic is expected on Paisano Street, which is already under construction.

Also, Sunland Park Drive, Executive Center Boulevard and Mesa Street will more than likely see heavy traffic Sunday.
