hillary floren. good morning, everyone. westerly winds will bring warm dry weather to southern nw mexico and west texas today. a cold front will move through the region tonight causing much cooler and olivas is live … the bill says no syrian or iraqi refugee can enter the u-s until a high- level officials certifies that they are not a threat. dozens of democrats joined republicans to pass the bill. the margin exceeds the two- thirds majority required to override a presidential veto. the bill calls for f- b-i background checks. congressman beto o’rourke voted against the bill. he turned to facebook to explain why. o’rourke says the bill is unnecessary and counterproductive and will potentially undermine the security of this country. he says quote– it plays into our enemy’s propaganda as it tarnishes the appeal of our historic ability to safely assimilate the oppressed and persecuted and seems to confirm their misrepresentation of our objectives in the middle east more than 2,000 syrian refugees already live in the u.s. and none are said to have ties to terrorism. a new bloomberg poll shows a majority of voters believe the top issue for the 2016 presidential campaign is terrorism. meanwhile france’s president says he is sticking to his commitment and allowing 25- thousand more syrian refugees. the highway to carlsbad from el paso is open again this morning after a deadly crash. it happened yesterday morning on highway 62/180, just past the border checkpoint. a tractor trailer and a privately owned tour bus crashed head on. the drivers of both vehicles were killed. the driver of the semi was from las cruces — he’s identified as 64- year-old steven cunningham. the driver of the bus was 31-year-old gregory hoke — he was from round rock, texas. hoke was driving a touring band. abc-7 spoke with a brother of one of the band members shortly after the crash: / “i was worried and frightfu because that is my brother and it sucks hearing when it happens to anybody but you never think it will happen to you or anyone you know until it happens and when it does happen it throws you for a loop and you dont believe it at first.” nicks brother andrew is the drummer for the band ghost inside and was involved in this deadly head on collision. medivac crews flew andrew to a nearby hospital and treated him for head trauma and several broken bones. all band and crew are alive and were accounted for. the band issued a statement following the crash. we’ll have that coming up later on good morning el paso friends and family have said their final goodbyes to diego fernandez. the 14-year-old was killed a in a car crash on i-10 two weeks ago. this is video of a memorial held for him at canutillo middle school where he was a student. diego was riding in a truck with his parents when — police say — his mother rear- ended a semi. that led to a chain reaction crash involving 4 other vehicles. funeral services for diego took place in west el paso yesterday. both of diego’s parents have since been released from the hospital. in anthony… an 18-wheeler ended up being hit by a train. it happened on the 83-hundred block of doniphan yesterday. el paso sheriff officials say the driver of the 18 wheeler failed to stop at the railroad crossing. the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. in canutillo –a family is picking up the pieces after a fire destroyed their mobile home. we first brought you this as breaking news on good morning el paso yesterday. this is video sent to us by one of our viewers . it happened shortly after 4 a-m yesterday on the 71-hundred block of third street. officials with west valley fire department said one person was injured as they tried to escape. they were flown to a hospital. the fire chief says the fire truck was too big to get close to the home — so firefighters had to lay about 600 feet of fire hose. the cause is still under investigation. now to another abc-7 update to a story we also brought you first on good morning el paso— police have made an arrest in an early morning stabbing in east el paso. 33-year-old daniel saldivar is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. police say he stabbed a man at the hiney’s sports bar yesterday around 2 a.m. saldivar allegedly got into a fight with the victim out in the bar’s patio shortly after closing. the fight continued in the parking lot behind the bar. police say saldivar took out a knife and stabbed the man. that’s when a witness attacked saldivar with a baseball bat. that explains the wounds to saldivar’s head in this mugshot. both the victim and saldivar were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. saldivar was taken into custody after he was released from the hospital.
