Irvin High School Administrator injured after trying to break up fight
An Irvin High School administrator was injured Wednesday after trying to break up a fight that broke out on campus.
The district says depending on what videos obtained by the district reveal, the students involved could potentially face suspension. The administrator meanwhile, is recovering from surgery after suffering a broken knee cap.
Students who witnessed the fight tell Abc-7, Assistant Principal Scott Gray was trying to break up the fight when he was pushed to the ground. Gray is the husband of Good Morning El Paso Anchor Stephanie Valle.
The district has obtained two videos of the incident that they’re currently reviewing in order to determine what exactly happened, that will also decide what punishment the students involved will receive.
EPISD has its own police force, with one officer assigned to every high school. Abc-7 was told the officer did respond to the fight. District teachers and administrators are also trained to respond during those types of situations, but students we spoke with say you never know what could happen. Sophomore Pablo Swatts says he doesn’t feel teachers and administrators are safe.
“No, they’re not. Why not? Because what if they get hurt, like the assistant principal yesterday, what if it could lead to something worse? What if a teacher dies? Because honestly, you just don’t know.”
In a statement, the district told Abc-7, “the district takes incidents like this one seriously, especially since it led to the injury of an employee. EPISD will continue to investigate this matter.”
It’s unclear how many assaults or incidents on campus happened in the past and if any teachers or administrators were injured in those situations.
