Canyon Randle Ends Chapin’s Season

The Chapin Huskies entered the area round of the playoffs on a ten-game winning streak. The defense had been an immovable object all year.

On Saturday , the defense met its match and the streak, along with the season, came to an end.

Canyon Randall’s Paul Terry rushed for 233 yards and scored six total touchdowns, and the Raiders broke a 21-21 halftime tie to dispatch Chapin 53-35.

“We didn’t come out fired up like we did in the first half,” Chapin athlete Brannon Bullitt said. “We made mistakes and they capitalized.”

“We couldn’t stop their run, which forces our offense to score every time we get the ball,” coach Rene Hernandez said. “There’s no window of opportunity. It closes down. You have to score 50 points on someone like that and hold on at the end.”

The offense, especially Brannon Bullitt, was on point for most of the game. Bullitt was sensational. The senior all-purpose athlete snared nine passes for 188 yards and four touchdowns, including an outstanding one-handed, 42 touchdown catch, with a defender draped over him.

“He came out here and played big man football,” Hernandez said. “They did everything they could to double him. They moved their big safety on him and he was still successful.”

“We’ve been doing it since we were eight,” said Bullitt, referring to himself and quarterback Matt Castillo. “When the big games come, we tend to be on point.”

Chapin scored on its first possession. On a trick play, Castillo tossed the ball back to running back Matt Zubiate, who found a wide open Bullitt for a 39 yard touchdown to give Chapin a 7-0 lead.

Canyon Randall answered with 14 straight points; the first of the two touchdowns coming from Terry.

Bullitt’s one-handed touchdown grab tied the game at 14.

Terry and Bullitt traded touchdowns to end the half and the game was tied at 21.

Terry’s third touchdown gave Canyon Randall a 28-21 lead with 7:30 to play in the third.

Just 24 seconds later, Randall scored again. The Raiders cashed in on an interception with a 59 yard touchdown strike from Logan Nix to Austin Parr. That gave them a 34-21 lead.

Chapin answered on its next possession. Castillo connected with Bullitt for another big gain, then followed it up by scrambling for a 13 yard touchdown run to trim the deficit to 34-28.

That was the closest it would get.

Terry scampered for two more touchdowns and Canyon Randall’s lead ballooned to 46-28 in the fourth quarter.

Mondarius Johnson’s 67 yard kickoff return set up Bullitt’s fourth touchdown. That gave the Huskies a chance.

Down 46-35, the Huskies recovered an onside kick at the Randall 47. On the ensuing possession, Chapin again tried the Zubiate to Bullitt trick play. This time, the pass was intercepted, all but ending any chance for the Huskies to get back in the game.

Terry followed the pick with his sixth touchdown and the Huskies never answered again.

Castillo was a strong 14/22 for 253 yards and 4 touchdowns (three pass, one rush) and 2 interceptions.

Bullitt will move on to play college football. After the game, he called UTEP one of the favorites to land him as a recruit.

Chapin finishes the season 10-2 with an unblemished record in district 1-5A.

Eastlake is now the only team in any classification from El Paso which is still alive in the playoffs. The Falcons will play at Midland Grande (the same field Chapin, Americas and Del Valle played on in round two) against Lake Dallas. Kickoff is set for 3PM mountain time on Friday.
