Three horses test positive for equine herpes at Frontera Training Facility, total now at 49

Three additional horses have tested positive for EHV-1 or equine herpes.

ABC-7 confirmed Thursday the horses came from the nearby Frontera training facility close to the Sunland Park racetrack. This brings the total up to 49 infected horses. Out of those 49 six have been euthanized for progressive neurologic signs.

No movement of horses is being allowed in or out of the Sunland Park quarantine perimeter, which includes the Frontera facility. Biosecurity measures are also being taken, such as taking temperatures of horses twice a day, hand-washing, washing and disinfecting anything a horse has touched or could touch.

Officials with the Livestock Board, Racing Commission and Sunland Park say they will continue to work together to resolve the issue.
