teacher: “oh wow! an el paso teacher has been named a finalist for a 2016 h- e-b excellence in education award, spotlighting him as one of the best educators in the lone star state. welcome back. that was john gable, a welding instructor at jefferson high school in south central el paso. today, h-e-b presented him with a one thousand dollar check for himself and a one thousand dollar check for his school. gable is a finalist for the lifetime achievement award in the secondary category. he will compete at the statewide level against four other teachers in his category for a cash prize: $25-thousand dollars for himself and another $25- thousand for his school. as you might imagine, the recognition brought the teacher to tears: john gable: “i’ve been here going on 25 years now. i’ve been elsewhere but this is the best place. it’s the kids. it’s the kids. they just have such a good heart about it and they laugh at my jokes. but you know, just the whole community, it’s a family here. when i came here as a teacher, the whole community took me in, not just the kids, but the whole community. and this is a great school and a great place to be at and i love it. and the great thing about it is that i work with so much cultural diversity.” gable and all finalists will meet in san antonio on may 12th and 13th to find out who the winner is. 4-point-9 percent! the u.s. labor department announced today the
