St. Pius student wins contest to greet pope

A 1st grader from St. Pius Catholic School has been selected to present Pope Francis with flowers when he arrives in Juarez later this month.

Seven-year-old Ana Ortega won a letter-writing contest organized by the Catholic Diocese of Juarez to greet the pope upon his arrival.

When asked about how she felt, Ana said she was excited. She added that when she greets him, she will ask him to ‘bless the whole world and all the people that are sick.”

Ana’s mother, also named Ana Ortega, told ABC-7 that the family is very happy about Ana presenting the pope with flowers. Ortega said Ana might not quite understand the magnitude of the experience because she’s seven, but Ana is happy about being picked.

The pontiff is scheduled to arrive at Abraham Gonzlez International Airport February 17 at around 10 in the morning.
