El Paso Zoo elephants make their predictions for Super Bowl 50

If the El Paso Zoo elephants have their way, it will be the Denver Broncos and not the Carolina Panthers who will win the 2016 Super Bowl.

For the third year in a row, Savannah and Juno made their predictions for the winner of the big game by selecting a helmet-shaped pinata set out for them in their exhibit by their zoo keepers. Both Savannah and Juno picked the Broncos helmet pinata. Although, Savannah did spend some time with the Panthers pinata, suggesting it could be a close game.

Carrie Trudeau, the zoo’s Animal Enrichment Coordinator, says the pinatas were not stuffed with anything in particular. “A lot of the times, the elephants just like the paper. It’s like eating the bark off of trees,” said Trudeau.

In 2014, both elephants correctly selected the Seattle Seahawks. The elephants picked the Seahawks again in 2015, but the New England Patriots won that year’s Super Bowl.

The fun activity serves as their enrichment for the day. Animal enrichment is provided to help provide mental and physical stimulation in the animal’s daily lives.
