The Pope’s Visit: Most schools expect students in class Monday despite Presidents Day
With the pope’s visit to Juarez now just days away, several school districts reiterated that students must to go to class on Monday or Presidents Day.
Pope Francis will be in Juarez on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and most school districts voted to cancel classes that day, citing among other things safety concerns.
Some districts will take the day off instead of the Presidents Day holiday:
Ysleta Independent School District: Monday classes resume. Students are off on Wednesday.
El Paso Independent School District: Monday class resume. Students are off on Wednesday.
Canutillo Independent School District: Students are off Monday and Wednesday. There is no make up day for middle schools or highs schools. Elementary schools will add seven minutes to end of the day Feb. 29-June 8. There will also be adjustments to be determined for the Northwest Early College.
Clint Independent School District: No classes on Monday for Presidents Day, but there will be classes on Wednesday.
San Elizario Independent School District: There will be classes on Monday, but no classes on Wednesday when the pope visits Juarez. SEISD doesn’t have a day off for Presidents Day, so it will be a “normal Monday,” a district spokesman said. Only staff need to make up the day. 3,900 SEISD students will be off Wednesday.
UTEP: Aside from the police department and other departments with crucial personnel, the University of Texas at El Paso will close the entire campus on Feb. 17. UTEP plans to make up the day on May 6, which was originally scheduled as a study day prior to final exams. The university does not have a day off for Presidents Day.
EPCC: Classes at El Paso Community College have been canceled for Feb. 17. The college does not have a day off for Presidents Day.
