School lockdowns lifted after reports of gunman nearby in custody
Several schools were placed on lockdown after reports of a gunman at a nearby outlet mall Thursday morning.
Anthony Police Chief Carlos Enriquez told ABC-7 that an assistant principal at Canutillo High School received a call about a teen with a weapon and that the caller identified the subject by name.
Anthony police located the teen between the high school and early college and took him into custody. He was only identified as a 17-year-old and possible former student of the high school. He is being held Juvenile Detention Center on a separate charge of probation violation, Enriquez said.
Officers have not recovered any weapon as of yet, and the investigation continues. Police are currently looking for the person who called the school.
A spokesman for the Canutillo Independent School Disitrict confirmed “a temporary perimeter lockdown following a report of a possible person with gun” at the Outlet Shoppes at El Paso in Canutillo.
CISD spokesman Shane Griffith said the lockdowns, which lasted for 20 minutes between 10:30 and 10:50 a.m., were lifted after learning a subject was in custody.
The schools affected included Canutillo High School, Northwest Early High School, Alderete Middle School, Canutillo Elementary School and the Lonestar Building.
