Man arrested after DASO says he threatened Family Dollar clerk

Doa Ana County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a Las Cruces man who is accused of trying to rob a store clerk.

Gerardo Rojas, 27, allegedly went into the Family Dollar on Thorpe Road and stood behind two customers in the check-out line. When Rojas was next in line, he reportedly told the clerk he needed $300 to pay bills and that he intended to rob the store. His hands were reportedly hidden underneath the sweatshirt he was wearing.

Although the clerk did not see a weapon, he called 911. When deputies arrived, Rojas was located down the street from the store.

Rojas was arrested and transported to the Doa Ana County Detention Center. He is charged with attempted armed robbery and is being held without bond, pending arraignment.

At the time of his arrest, Rojas also had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear, which carried a $1,000 cash bond.
