Racing may resume Friday at Sunland Park Racetrack

There’s a possibility racing may resume at Sunland Park Racetrack as early as this Friday.

Several training facilities went under quarantine a month ago after an outbreak of the equine herpes virus.

To date, 72 horses in New Mexico have since tested positive for the virus. Sunland Park Racetrack officials met with the New Mexico Racing Commisison this week.

Despite the outbreak, the racetrack plans to resume horse racing this month.

Racetrack spokesman Ethan Linder told ABC-7 in the past six days, no horses have been diagnosed with the virus. He said as long as there are no significant outbreaks this week, racing will resume. Linder said a task force will meet on Tuesday to make final arrangements, and if they get the green light, the racetrack will then make an official announcement.
