Neighbors fear safety on Las Cruces road after fatal pedestrian crash

The Las Cruces community is still shaken after a woman was struck and killed while crossing the street two nights ago.

Las Cruces Police say it happened on 900 S. Telshor Blvd.

A Las Cruces spokesman says in the past couple of years, they’ve seen an increase in pedestrians not using crosswalks. They’ve also seen an increase in vehicles not yielding to pedestrians while using crosswalks.

63-year-old Romy Chavarria wasn’t using a crosswalk when she was killed Monday night. She was struck by a Ford Explorer traveling south on Telshor Blvd. shortly after 8 p.m. Several passerby rendered aid to the victim until emergency personnel arrived.

Chavarria was transported to Mountain View Regional Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries.

On Monday, multiple nearby neighbors expressed the need for more crosswalks in the area. They said the two crosswalks on Telshor Blvd. are too far away from the bus stop. Some said often times, drivers speed up when they see a pedestrian crossing.
