Medical students celebrate Match Day

Match Day is the day when medical graduates from around the nation and from the Texas Tech University Health and Sciences Center are paired to a residency program.

The doctors-to-be apply to programs around the country and today they found out where they will be starting their careers.

First they deliver the box.

Then students eagerly anticipate the news and then, “5,4,3,2,1” The medical students count down.

After 4 years of hard work and dedication students are so nervous they can’t even open their boxes and then they know.

“I’m going to be a surgeon,” shouted graduate Komola Azimova.

“I’m going to be going into neurosurgery,” Ethan Tabibian told ABC-7.

With close friends and family nearby students shed tears of happiness and gave hugs of joy.

Many are going to prestigious schools and hospitals.

“I’m going to the University of Alabama at Birmingham,” Tabibian said.

“I’m going to Avinton in Pennsylvania,” Azimova said.

For students like Tabibian, it’s a major life change and a career path that will shape his future.

“It’s going to take some time to process. I know I’m going to a great place. I’m really excited I’m going to be there seven years; it’s going to become my home,” said Tabibian.
