El Pasoans across town celebrate Easter weekend
With Easter just a day away, people across El Paso were celebrating the holiday weekend in a lot of different ways.
A northeastern El Paso tradition for 38 years now, the NorthEaster parade along Dyer Street brought out the young and old, long-time residents and those new to the area. Organized by the Transmountain Optomists, the parade featured local elected officials like Congressman Beto O’Rourke, area teams and bands and of course bunnies and eggs in spades.
A little later Saturday at the Armijo Aquatic Center in south central El Paso, the parks and recreation department held their annual Golden Egg and April Pools Day event. It’s cake walks, musical chairs, decorating, prizes and more with an Easter theme for kids around the community, along with an egg hunt with a twist. The staff puts buckets of plastic eggs with different sea creatures inside for the different age groups, and tohelp promote swimming safety.
“It’s our chance to give back to the community and raise some awareness in the community,” said community center supervisor Stacey Wright. “The weather is getting warmer. We want kids and families to be aware of water that’s around the area that they might not normally think of. Like puddles of water, drainage ditches, arroyos that are normally dry this time of year but can fill up with water quickly, as well as promote learn to swim. Get those kids ready to learn to swim this summer.”
