Gas odor forces apartment complex to evacuate overnight

Residents of a Lower Valley apartment complex were forced to stay up late Monday night due to a strong odor of gas in the area.

The incident began around 11 p.m. on the 600 block of North Carolina Drive. Firefighters say they got a call about a strong odor of gas coming from a storm drain. Residents of the nearby Pearl Apartments were evacuated as a precaution.

At around 1 a.m., firefighters determined that readings were normal and residents were allowed back into their apartments. Emergency crews have not said what caused the gas odor.
