Cost of San Jacinto Plaza goes up
The renovated San Jacinto Plaza is open to the public, but the project is not officially completed.
El Paso City Council members voted Monday to pay another $35,729 dollars to SWA — the California company behind the redesign. The move is an extension of services during what’s being called the closeout process.
City officials say this is standard during any construction project. The focus now is on walk-throughs to make sure things like the Plaza’s fountain and lights are working properly.
“We will use these next few weeks and months just to work out any kinks. Obviously the plants and all of the items are under warranty. So we are going to want to make sure that everything is functioning properly and in the case anything needs to be replaced we can do so,” said City Rep. Cortney Niland.
Once the punch list is completed, there are more financial details to be worked out.
“And then we will sit down and actually start talking about the closeout of the contract. Because in this instance, you know we have issues with the liquidated damages, they have some claims for change orders. So we need to sit down and have a resolution of that,” said City Attorney Sylvia Firth.
The total amount for the SWA contract is now $674,033. The total budget for the San Jacinto Plaza Redesign was $6 million.
